Android is set to introduce a “repair mode” feature that aims to protect users’ personal data from prying eyes. Currently in development by Google, this feature will be incorporated into stock Android and will ensure that personal data remains hidden while still allowing repair technicians access to the smartphone’s core functionalities. To enter and exit repair mode, users will need to provide their lockscreen credentials, adding an extra layer of security.

Even though smartphones have become more durable and stronger over the last few years, there is still a chance that repairs may be required during a device’s lifespan. However, the prospect of having personal data exposed during the repair process can be a cause for concern for many users.

In order to alleviate these worries, Google has been spotted by Mishaal Rahman that they are working on a “repair mode” feature into Android.

Android-Repair-Mode

Repair mode will enable users to send their devices in for repairs without the need to wipe the data on them. In this mode, technicians will not be able to access apps and personal data, but will still be able to perform diagnostics on the unit that needs to be repaired.

This is achieved by utilizing the Dynamic System Updates mechanism, which allows Android smartphones to start using a Generic System Image (GSI). In the case of repair mode, the original boot system image is combined together with a user data image, creating a clean instance of the operating system. When the user exits repair mode, the instance created is removed and the previous user data image is restored. In addition, booting and removing repair mode will require the user’s lockscreen password, ensuring that personal data remains secure even after rebooting.

Similar features have been offered by other smartphone manufacturers, such as Samsung’s One UI Maintenance Mode. Google is also reportedly set to introduce a Repair Mode for Pixel devices in December 2023. For other Android manufacturers, the new repair mode is expected to be released in future updates.
